This Privacy Notice applies only to the Personal Information collected through this website, www.safeinsights.org (the “Site”), which serves as a landing site for the SafeInsights program, a part of Rice University. Please be aware that this website acts solely as an introductory point to SafeInsights and that the privacy practices of the program itself are addressed elsewhere, including at the applicable point of collection.

To the extent that our Site offers services, or provides links to other websites, those websites and services are not governed by this Privacy Notice. Please review the notices and policies associated with those websites or services to understand how your Personal Information may be collected, stored, or used.

Please read this Privacy Notice carefully before using our Site. If you do not agree to this Privacy Notice, then you must not access or otherwise use the Site.

Information We Collect

Our Site collects a limited amount of information from users for the operation of the Site and as provided by a user. When you interact with the Site, by contacting us or joining a mailing list, or responding to one of our surveys, you will be providing us with certain information, like your name, email address, telephone number, and any other information that you choose to provide to us. In addition, by visiting our Site, we automatically collect certain information about you, including:

  • Information about the device you used to browse the Site, and the browser that you use;

  • Technical data, including your IP address, Operating System, and certain plug-in information, as well as referring and exiting URLs;

  • How you use our Site, including the sub-pages that you visit, how often you visit, and how you interact with the Site, which may include information on the date and time of your visit and how long you spent on the Site;

  • Certain location information (geolocation data) based on your IP address and point of connectivity to the Site; and

  • Information we generate about you (e.g., our understanding of your interests and relevant demographics as a result of your use of the Site; whether you are a regular or occasional user of the Site).

Collectively, the information you provide when contacting us or that is automatically collected by us, is herein referred to as “Personal Information”.

To the extent applicable, we collect and process Personal Information based on the following legal grounds under the GDPR:

  • Consent: We rely on your explicit consent to process Personal Information for specific purposes such as sending newsletters, promotional communications, and other information that may be of interest to you. You have the right to withdraw your consent at any time.

  • Contractual Necessities: We process Personal Information necessary for the performance of a contract to which you are a party, or in order to take steps at your request prior to entering into a contract. This includes processing necessary for enrolling you in our educational programs, managing memberships, or providing other services.

  • Legal Obligations: We process Personal Information as required by law, such as for compliance with our financial regulatory and reporting obligations.

  • Legitimate Interests: We process Personal Information based on legitimate interests pursued by us, as long as these interests do not override your fundamental rights and freedoms. Our legitimate interests include enhancing, modifying, personalizing, or otherwise improving our Site for the benefit of our members and participants. This basis is also used for administrative purposes, security measures, and direct marketing.

How We Use Your Personal Information

We use the Personal Information that we collect about you for the following purposes:

  • To provide this Site to you and to monitor, maintain, and improve the functionality of the Site;

  • To communicate with you either based on information that you provide to us (when you sign-up for an email list or request information) or based on what we believe you might be interested in, though you have the right and ability to opt-out of these communications at any time;

  • To facilitate support services that you request or require from us, such as when you submit a request for help on the Site;

How We Share Personal Information

We may share personal information that we collect about you with:

We may share your Personal Information with our: (a) employees, agents, and affiliates who have a need to know; (b) our service providers to process it for us based on our instructions and for no other purpose; and (c) with third-party partners that are collaborating with us.

We do not share your Personal Information with any third party (including our service providers) for marketing purposes unless you have provided consent for us to do so. If you believe Personal Information you provided to us is being misused by a third party, please contact us right away.

  • Other visitors to our Site

Any Personal Information you include in feedback, comments, responses, messages, chats, photos, videos, or other data or content you submit to interactive portions of our Site may be viewed by other visitors to those portions of our Site.

  • Law enforcement

We may share your Personal Information with law enforcement, other government agencies or authorities, or third parties as required by applicable law, court order, subpoena, or legal process served on us.

Transfer of control

We will not transfer control over Personal Information to any third party unless such transfer is expressly consented to by you or required to comply with applicable law, court order, subpoena, or legal process served on us.

We employ third-party analytics services, including Google Analytics and others, to gather information about your use of our Site, which enables us to improve the Site and your experience.

Google Analytics and other third-party analytics services use cookies and similar technologies to gather information about use of our Site and to report trends to us, without identifying individuals to us. We use this information to see the overall patterns of usage on our Site, help us record any difficulties you have with our Site, and tell us whether our communication efforts are effective. We may also link the information provided by third-party analytics services with the information we collect, or you provide in other contexts on our site and tools (newsletters, etc.), to personalize, connect and streamline your experience when visiting our Site.

Do-Not-Track Requests

International Transfers

By using our Site and providing us with Personal Information, you understand that your Personal Information is being collected and stored on, and may be transferred to, servers located outside your resident jurisdiction. SafeInsights takes the security of your information seriously and has dedicated resources to the protection of your Personal Information. This includes technological controls and a staff that is trained in information confidentiality, integrity, and availability of el ectronic data, resources, and communications, however no transmission of data over the internet or any other public network can be guaranteed to be completely accurate or secure. However, information collected by third-parties may not have the same security protections for the Personal Information you submit to us, and we are not responsible for protecting the security of such Personal Information handled by third parties.
